There were days that Mary thought she might not get any rest. Things were challenging in a way very different to the way they had been when Evie was young. Now she was getting about, running to and fro, as brazen as anything. Mary worried that if she averted her eyes for more than a moment their daughter would run off and get into trouble that she couldn't fix.
She feels more exhausted than she'd ever expected when Evelyn finally goes to sleep after rounds of running out each time that Mary thought she might be finally out. She's only just poured a glass of wine when she hears the door opening and John call out, home from a late shift at the clinic.
"Shhhh," she hisses, hoping that Evie won't be disturbed. Mary pulls down a second glass, filling it too and walking out to meet her husband. "Your daughter is a monster."
